After her young son is murdered, Kamlyn Paige discovers that there are paranormal elements in the world that she never imagined existed. Seeking revenge, she is recruited to join the Chamber of Darkness, an organization that hunts and destroys supernatural creatures, such as the one that took her son’s life. As Kamlyn starts her training as a huntsman, she learns that there is more at stake than just seeking revenge for her son’s life. It may be up to her to save the world.

Alex Apostol’s Broken Angel has a very interesting concept. It feels very much like a mix between Supernatural and Harry Potter. Most of the huntsmen at the Chamber of Darkness are descended from a long line of huntsmen. Kamlyn is viewed as an outsider by many within the organization, creating quite a bit of tension with some of her fellow recruits along the way. The theme of being an outsider is a constant throughout this book. Kamlyn has to prove herself more than anybody else, because she is not a descendant.

Throughout the book there are several grammatical errors which made it difficult to read at times. I found myself going back and re-reading passages because of these mistakes. I also felt as though the author describes the characters a little too much with a tendency to tell instead of show. For example, the story opens at the funeral of Kamlyn’s son, and instead of showing us what a tragic event this is by connecting us to the emotions Kamlyn is feeling, the author spends too much time providing unnecessary details about what other characters look like. The dialogue in the first couple of chapters also feels a little forced, and the conversations do not flow naturally. As the story progresses the dialogue does get better.

Broken Angel is an interesting story, and, although a few of the characters were a bit one-dimensional, the central players had depth. Apostol has created some strong characters who readers will care about. I did root for Kamlyn to succeed. Broken Angel is only the beginning of her story, and I do think that the series could be fun.

I give Broken Angel 2 out of 4 stars. Even though there are issues with the quality of the writing, the story is engaging. I would pick up the next book in the series to see where Kamlyn’s journey takes her next. However, due to the distractions created by the grammatical errors and the tendency to tell instead of show, I could not give this book a higher rating.
