Dodged Bullets is a short story written by Lynn Sutton. The story follows the main character Olivia, who decided she needs a break. She needs to be alone, so in her infinite wisdom, she decided to go on a hiking trip all alone. Because of this decision, trouble ensues. Told in third person point of view, the focus changes depending on what character is important for the scene.

I give this book a 2 out of 4 rating. The book was honestly disappointing.

Claimed as romance genre, the book started out very suspenseful. In my opinion, it was wrongly categorized. There was very little romance in this story. The first real aspects of romance were incorporated about three-fourths of the way into the story, lasted for a few pages, fizzled out, and then got reintroduced in the last couple pages. Furthermore, the romance scenes that were included felt fake and unnatural. They seemed to be forced and sprouted out of nowhere.

The story itself wasn't bad. The author did a good job of causing the reader's curiosity to peak and ask questions. She just didn't execute it properly.

The book suffered from poor word choice and weird phrasing. There were words that just didn't seem to fit in with the style, like the author would throw in a big word just to say, "Look, I know this word." Some of the phrases had a similar feel, like when the author would compare an action to something, but instead of painting a clear picture in the reader's mind, it left the reader confused.

The story also suffered from a lot of tell, not show. Information was forced onto the reader, by the main character suddenly remembering something or the focus changing to a different character. The author also would word things in a way to fabricate and force certain moods. The wording ended up awkward and didn't have the proper effect on the reader.

The main character Olivia seemed fairly flat. The reader doesn't learn much about her character, and most of what of the reader does learn, the author states it, once again suffering from tell rather than show. I did not have any sympathy for Olivia, despite all she went through. I just didn't connect with her and didn't really care what happened to her in the end.

In conclusion, I did not like Dodged Bullets, but it may have not been for me. I would have preferred more focus on the romance aspect. However, I would consider recommending it to someone who likes suspense with just a tad bit of romance.
