Salt and Pepper by Maria Akhanji, a British Bangladeshi Muslim writer, delves into the challenges faced by British Asian and Muslim women through the protagonist Ranya. The contemporary women's novel portrays Ranya's life as she conforms to societal norms to escape turmoil.

Themes of patriarchy, female oppression, religion, and culture are explored, evoking emotions of anger, frustration, and defeat. Ranya, a young British Bangladeshi Muslim, seeks education, independence, and a true home, escaping a harsh family life. After moving to her brother's home in London, she faces mistreatment, eventually agreeing to an arranged marriage to escape. Unbeknownst to her, this decision leads to further suffering and entrapment, illustrating her movement from one form of captivity to another.

I appreciate the author's skilful approach to a sensitive topic, highlighting the vulnerable position of young women, as exemplified by Ranya. These women aspire to happiness and the pursuit of their dreams but are marginalized due to societal and religious constraints. The narrative evoked intense emotions, including anger, and offered a glimpse into unfamiliar cultural dynamics and family bonds, providing a valuable cross-cultural perspective.

I don't have any specific dislikes about this, except that it might act as a trigger for individuals with past traumas. Apart from this potential effect, I don't hold any particular negative sentiments toward it. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those seeking the unforeseen in domestic fiction. It's especially for those interested in grasping the darker aspects of society.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because the author's adeptness at effectively conveying the story through their powerful writing greatly impressed me. The readability of the prose contributed to a smooth and engaging reading experience. Notably, the book stood out with its exceptional editing, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and a lack of errors. This commendable work by the author merits a high rating, offering readers a well-crafted narrative that resonates strongly.
