Although J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison's Fish Wielder offers a distinctive perspective on the fantasy genre, it nevertheless manages to be enjoyable and lives up to fantasy fans' expectations.

If a 12-inch koi fish going into a pub doesn't get your attention, a tiger-striped horse who frequently gets drowsy at the most inconvenient times will most certainly do the trick. Thoral, a brawny barbarian with a beard, teams with both of those unusual beasts on his adventures throughout Grome. Before it's too late, they aim to find a chocolate pudding with power infusion. The group frequently encounters situations that may have killed them during their incredible voyage. They deal with many odd animals, fight magic, and even save a princess. The entire story is gruesome, silly, hysterical and amusing.

Like one would expect from a fantasy book, there is action throughout the entire book. However, one cannot help but chuckle at the witty remarks, touching exchanges between the group, and amusing portrayal of the most graphic incidents. In this book, humor takes the center stage. Nothing about this book bothers me. The reading experience is unaffected by the fact that sometimes, paying close attention to the timeline is necessary. The author creates a book where eyeballs fly and heads kill multiple guys, breaking every rule of crafting a fantasy! And who can forget the beer-loving, non-swimming fish?

The book has excellent editing and numerous allusions to other well-known authors and literary works. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein, The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, and The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis are all subtly parodied in the book. It is admirable that the author refrains from cracking an inappropriate joke at the wrong time. I will give it a score of 5 out of 5 because I see no reason to take away any points.

A twist in the novel's conclusion leaves room for a possible continuation. Though the gory sections might not be suitable for very young readers, I would still suggest this book to everyone.
