The Saltwater Ghost by Sheila Jane is a fictional story that encompasses a lot of emotions. It deals with loss of friends, family separation, and healing.

Alden Jurrien is an English teacher and has left his home and family to teach in India. His life is going along day to day until he receives a letter from Canada offering him a position at Abegweit University on Prince Edward Island where he grew up. He is torn about leaving behind the students who desperately need guidance and excellent teachers and returning home to face the ghosts of his past. He decides to return and become a professor at the university and purchases the family home where he grew up. Will he be able to face a tragedy that happened when he was a teen and forgive himself for his part in it? Have his old friends truly found a way to move on and will they be able to assist him? Is the ghost of Saltwater real or is she just an old legend? These are questions that will be answered in this gripping story.

I found this book difficult to put down and read it in a day. I found Alden to be a character who drew you in to his struggles and I really wanted to see things turn out well for him. Even though he is now in his mid-forties, Alden is very troubled by an incident that happened when he was a teenager and struggles to deal with what he perceives as his part in it. Dana, who grew up across the street, tries to help him by sharing how she dealt with her own guilt. Alden’s two children are teenagers now and have very different reactions to his return; both of these characters are well written and their sense of abandonment tore at my heart. I was rooting for the students left in India also and hoped they would be successful. I found all of the characters to be very relatable and all acted like real people.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found the writing style to be engaging and drawing the reader into the story; there was a minor issue of mixed up words a couple of times. I found the storyline easy to read and follow. The focus is a brighter future and not the sadness of the past. There is an unexpected surprise at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about how people overcome the hurts and losses of their pasts and move on to happier futures. One of the characters is a Christian and always praising God for the outcomes of circumstances; he is a minor character and not present through a lot of the book, just wanted to let you know in case this might bother you.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
