Review of When Business Is Love
Do you own a business or a company? Do you always ponder how to take your business or company to the next level? The book When Business is Love by Jan Ryde takes the reader through the business philosophy of the CEO of the world-renowned Hastens bed company. Furthermore, it takes the reader through the long history of the Hastens company, and it gives its readers a detailed explanation of the failures and also the great success the company has faced over a century (170 years of life span). Through the point of view of Jan Ryde, the current CEO of Hastens, we get to know the reason for Hastens explosive and continued growth in the global market. We are introduced to the secret recipe that has fueled the rapid growth of the Hastens company under Jan Ryde; this secret ingredient turns out to be love. It explains to us how embracing the mindset of love in running the company has greatly impacted the working conditions, dedication of Hastens workers, and Hastens high-quality craftsmanship.
The first thing that stands out in this book is the author's engaging and refined writing style, from the use of well-positioned metaphorical sentences, to the author's ability to use real-life stories and examples to help solidify his points, even down to the structure of his sentences. All these things made reading the book exhilarating and quite enjoyable. Also, the author was able to bring his unique perspective to the business world and explain to the readers how such an abstract concept as love could have a great impact on a business. He didn’t just use theoretical aspects; he went further to teach the reader how any business or company owner could practically apply love to help their business grow. I always believed that things like love have little impact on a business over hard work, but the book was able to convince me otherwise, and for me, that’s a plus. Another outstanding aspect of the book is the efforts the author put into editing it; there were absolutely no grammatical errors throughout the book. While reading, I came across some Christian undertones at some points of the textbook, ranging from Bible verses to Biblical moral lessons and teachings. He was able to capture the multifaceted nature of the Bible and how it cuts across different aspects of life, including business.
There was some repetition of information, but that's what you expect with this kind of topic, where you cannot truly talk about one area without really reiterating on previous information. The repetitions were few and did not stop my flow of reading, but it all depends on the unique taste of the reader.
Reading this book was both refreshing and educational. From the beautiful writing style, delivery and the unique perspective the author brought to the table. I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars rating. It is worth giving it a shot, especially for small business owners who plan to expand their business, owners of already established companies who desire to re-strategize and those who intend to establish a flourishing business in the near future.
