Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
I rate this book a 5 on a scale of 1-5. No points were deducted due to the superb editing, spelling, grammar, and content. This book is a science fiction novel. There are some instances of profanity in the book, and the first one is found on page 48 which states, "Oh sh*t, you're Galen". This novel is set in the mythical world of Voulhire and revolves around several different characters who live in different parts of the empire. Mages, soldiers, and citizens all reside in the kingdom and live more or less peacefully with one another, but all is not how it seems. I did not see any typos or errors, and I enjoyed that the book used first and third-person perspectives from the vantage points of different characters.
This book is written by Matthew Tysz. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first in a series of fantasy action novels. This book sets the stage for the reader to understand the kingdom of Voulhire, its history, culture, politics, and people. This is no small feat because each area of Voulhire is different. The Kingdom includes several cities, including Soulhire, Virko, Yamen Soul, and Magnum Caelum. Each of these places is known for and composes a different aspect of Voulhire's past, present, and/or future. The reader learns throughout the book the importance and influence of both commerce and culture. Tysz also includes a map at the beginning of the novel to help guide the reader through their journey to Voulhire.
The beginning of this novel can be viewed negatively by the impatient reader. As I read, I wondered why the book started as it did. There was a heavy focus on the character Galen. The story seemed disjointed, and a majority of the following chapters did not follow Galen. However, as one reads on, she is rewarded with Voulhire being established as a connected world.
Meldorath and Orlin are the obvious villains of the novel. They demonstrate how biomage magic can be used in harmful evil ways. Even from beyond the grave, the mere thought of these vile lords threatens the safety and sense of security that the people of Voulhire seem to have. King Wilhelm was the ruler of Voulhire and appointed Lord Eldus to bring increased commerce and maintain security for the town of Virko. However, Lord Eldus has large shoes to fill due to Lord Meldorath and Orlin leaving horrible stains and remnants of evil in the town where they previously resided.
