Review of Crazy Time
"Crazy Time: A Bizarre Battle with Darkness and the Divine" by L. Andrew Cooper is a spine-chilling horror novel that follows the harrowing journey of Lily Henshaw and her friends after a night out takes a horrifying turn. The story begins with a sinister truck relentlessly pursuing Lily and her friends on the highway, leading to a tragic accident. From there, the narrative spirals into a nightmarish sequence of events, including murders, suicides, biblical plagues, and more. I hated every instant of it, in a good way!
One of the strengths of this novel is its ease of reading. The story is easy to follow, and despite the dark and complex themes, the author manages to keep a clear narrative all along. The religious theme that runs throughout the story adds depth to Lily's character as she grapples with her beliefs, transforming from a non-believer to someone who questions whether she is cursed by God. This evolution of Lily's character is a central focus and adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. It is something that irked me at first, but I eventually appreciated it for the narrative tool it was.
The book is exceptionally descriptive, allowing readers to vividly visualize each scene. The author's detailed descriptions create a surreal and unpredictable atmosphere that keeps the reader engaged and eager to uncover the story's conclusion. The incorporation of supernatural elements, combined with psychological, romantic, and spiritual aspects, adds depth to the storytelling. It really works vry well.
The author skillfully balances themes of good and evil, reality and fantasy, and psychological and supernatural elements, creating a narrative that is both thought-provoking and unsettling. The book's editing and grammar are well-executed, contributing to a seamless reading experience. I couldn't find any errors, and I have to insist on how well it is written in terms of sentenc structure, lexicon choice, pacing through punctuation...
However, there are a few areas of improvement. The use of some less common vocabulary might require readers to look up the meanings of certain words, which could disrupt the reading flow. Additionally, the dark and profane nature of the book may not be suitable for all readers, especially those sensitive to such content. It didn't bother me because I am an adult who enjoys adult themes and that is why I picked up this book.
In summary, "Crazy Time: A Bizarre Battle with Darkness and the Divine" is a gripping horror novel that explores themes of faith and the psychological impact of trauma in an interesting way. While it may not be suitable for all readers due to its dark themes, it offers an engaging and thought-provoking narrative. I will give it a 5 out of 5 rating because I am able to fully appreciate its unique style and storytelling. I do acknowledge that the content may not appeal to all audiences.

It's really one of its strengths! I mean it's no Tolkien-levels of descriptions, but it feels granular and the dissonance with the religious themes and symbols was uncanny (in the right way for a crime mystery story).
Hope you'll like it!
