Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is a children's book by Catherine Anna Pepe. The book targets 5+-year-olds, with its interesting story full of moral lessons for children. The book is part of the 'Grandma Gang Series' by Anna Pepe and tells the story of Donny and his sister, Mary Grace. When Mary Grace's parents informed them that they would be going on a mission in Africa for two years, it was devastating for Mary Grace. This meant that on top of not seeing her parents for two years, she had to move from her hometown to California and leave all her friends behind. This was the beginning of the inner turmoil of Mary Grace. As for Donny, his positive outlook on life made him take the news with stride, and he could not wait to start the new adventure. This introduction sets the pace for what became an exhilarating experience for the two children and their grandma in California. What does life have in store for them? Would it be easy for Mary Grace to adapt to change over time? What adventures lie ahead for them in California?
This book teaches young children about important topics such as bullying and how to identify it. The book features a character named Donny, who has Down syndrome, but the author does not portray his disability as a weakness. Instead, she shows Donny as a fun-loving boy loved by his parents and everyone who meets him. This is an important lesson for children, as it teaches them to be considerate of people with special needs. The inclusion of people with disabilities in this book is an important aspect, and I believe that anyone who reads this book to their children will help them gain valuable life skills.
Other than the absence of grammatical errors, I loved the author's realistic portrayal of children in the book. Using Mary Grace, she showed that children could experience a range of emotions, including anger and selfishness, just like adults. She also envisaged that adults can be understanding and supportive of children's feelings and that they can work together to solve problems. This is an important message for children and adults, as it teaches us that we should always be considerate of others, regardless of age.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. It was cleverly written and full of interesting facts, and the plot twist in the 'case of the bully' was remarkable. The language was clear and easy to understand, and the author didn’t shy away from addressing sensitive issues. I particularly appreciated the section on identifying bullying, which could be very helpful for children who are being bullied or know someone who is being taunted.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. An adult may find the book a bit bland, but I believe children will find it exhilarating. It can be a great setting for starting sensitive topics with children as parents read the book to or with their children.
