Niching Up is a business book revolving around Chris Dreyer’s experience as a businessperson specialising in niche markets. The book addresses the downsides of starting a niche business but predominantly looks at recognising opportunities, gaining expertise, taking advantage of premium prices, converting prospects to clients, gaining better relationships in the chosen industry, getting and giving more referrals, and becoming more efficient.

The concept of this book is to encourage people to attack the niche market instead of crowded markets as well as understand the importance of becoming an expert in the area by learning from other experts. After all, expertise in the niche market will benefit the businessperson in the long run, as well as taking into consideration that education is ongoing and becoming more efficient in the area of choice already puts the businessperson at an advantage. Niching Up provides more advantages than disadvantages but makes it clear that while one of the advantages is no competition, that advantage might not last.

Dreyer makes it clear that niching is not for everyone but he demonstrates that it is worth considering, providing a few reasons why it might not be an easy task and plenty of reasons why having knowledge of a niche area will be beneficial. Such reasons include being an expert in the area, having less competition (initially), and making the most of charging premium prices. Structurally, the book is extremely pleasant to read and provides clear subheadings with thought-provoking questions to take into consideration when making the decision to find a niche market.

It is clear that Niching Up is not a step-by-step guide. So, the book is vague and open as it is supposed to kick-start ideas for readers interested in moving away from mass markets or who are just getting started. However, the book misses the opportunity to provide some testimonials and concrete examples of niche businesses.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. As aforementioned, Niching Up is not a step-by-step guide to starting a business with a specific niche; this is a personal account of how Dreyer learned the benefits of niching and his ultimate advice based on experience. Dreyer aims his book for business owners who are not happy with their current margins and who hope to apply what Dreyer has discovered along the way. But on the whole, this is a good guide for anyone interested in general non-fiction, as well as existing businesspeople and those who are just getting started.

Yes, you're right. Some people only go into the industries with so many people already. Well, they might love it but there are some few industry that has few competition or no competition at all. Same way, there are some environments that are less competitive and will easily make one to nich up in one's business. I agree with you.
The author has said it well, I'm anticipating to read this book.
Your review is well-written, I love it.
