Review of Niching Up

[Following is a volunteer review of "Niching Up" by Chris Dreyer.]
Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, The Bigger the Prize by Chris Dreyer is an easy read that teaches its readers how to figure out success in what they specialization in. The main take away from this book is that when one specializes in a particular field, everyone from themselves to the people they are helping benefit.
The process of specializing coincides nicely with the title. As one would assume from the title of the book, Dreyer is a proponent of finding one’s niche within the working world. This goes against what most people tend to do when they enter the career sphere. Generally speaking, most people try to become adept at a number of things in the hopes that one might stick and open up career prospects.
Some self-help books can come across as condescending when reading them. This, however, is not the case with Niching Up. Dreyer makes it feel like the concepts he is teaching through his book can be attained by anyone with a goal. He does, however, point out that this might not be applicable for all readers and all fields. That was honestly what I thought was one of the best things about this book. Instead of a self-help novelist talking at the reader as if their word is law, Dreyer talks to the reader and explains why the concepts could help in various situations.
I would have to give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was well written, well edited and well presented to its readers. My only complaint might be that it was a bit too easy to read. It almost feels like it was written for an audience younger than those in the working world to whom the book seems to be aimed at.
This book is a must-read for those looking to advance in their careers or find a job that better suits their interests. Whether it’s someone in a data centre looking to specialize further in their field or a school teacher seeking further certification, Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, The Bigger the Prize could be the thing that helps them make a change in their life for the better.
