[Following is a volunteer review of "Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book" by Kalliope Barlis.]
Do you play golf? Have you spent a fair amount of money for top-notch golf clubs and how-to lessons? Have you tried to correct your swing with various stances and grips? Do you continually struggle to get your golf game up to par? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should consider reading Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book by Kalliope Barlis.
Kalliope Barlis only started to play golf when she was in her twenties. She became a professional golfer in just two years. How did she manage to accomplish such a feat? In this book she explained that she benefitted from Neuro-Linguistic Programming which was a technique used by her coach Chuck Hogan. Kalliope learned that the most important piece of golf equipment that she owned was her mind.
To quote from this book, in regard to neuro-linguistic programming, " Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) recognizes that everyone has the ability to change for the better because we all possess the resources we need to do so. And change begins and lasts with how we think."
Barlis uses easy- to-understand language and inspirational messages to assist you to improve your golf game. She breaks down the game by its various facets, whether they are a practice session, a visualization, taking a shot, analyzing a shot, learning from the outcome, playing the game, or setting a goal. In each of these facets she guides you with examples of types of thoughts you should think prior to taking an action, thoughts you should magnify, and thoughts you must quickly make disappear from your mind. She gives you mantras that you can say to yourself and visualizations with magnified targets that will provide the positive outcomes that you desire to have on the golf course. The main theme of the book is that positive thoughts with defined targets in mind will do more for your game than practicing repetitive drills and buying more expensive equipment.
When my drive slices into the woods or I top the ball on the fairway, the negative impact on my game is immediate. More often than not, the feeling of frustration and bewilderment stays in my brain for at least the next two shots or even the next two holes. I realize, that this type of result is due to my lack of positive mental preparation before taking the shot and my magnification of the negative outcome in my mind. This book is meant to be kept in your golf bag for quick reference before you take your next swing.
This book was well-written and well edited. I am sold on the idea that the mind is the most important piece of equipment that a golfer possesses. Kalliope Barlis did a great job explaining how I should use my mind to play better golf. For these reasons I gave Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book 5 out of 5 stars.
It may be worth noting that there is one profane word as well as one phrase with a humorous double meaning that can be construed as sexual in nature in this book.
