[Following is a volunteer review of "Fresh Beginnings" by Leela Dutt.]
Fresh Beginnings by Leela Dutt is a collection of eleven short stories ranging from the genre of science fiction to romance to humour. Varying vastly from one another, these stories all have narrators, although some aren't even humans. They are all set in different parts of the world, and they will all leave you mystified and amazed. The author came up with a different concept and setting for each story, and the efforts are seen clearly in the book. The book starts with a contents page listing all the stories that are included in the book.
The author's writing style was extremely impressive—simple yet bold and effective. She has a way with words that makes the story seem relatable, even if it's narrated from the point of view of an orangutan. The stories themselves were exceptionally fresh and original. They can make you laugh, cry, or put you deep in thought. Each of the characters in all the stories had a different and unique personality trait, be it quirky, serious, or loveable. Creating characters with such distinctive and unexplored personalities is a talent, and I respect the author deeply for that.
The story titled "Fresh Beginnings" was my personal favourite. It is written in the form of correspondence exchanged between two people. The author also managed to capture each location's cultural identity quite accurately, which was impressive. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the chapter titles as well.
I found no negatives in the book. Leela Dutt has created a book that might just be impossible to criticise.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its applaudable originality. It is easy to read, not time-consuming, and all the stories are extremely likeable. I found no profanities, but there was some sexual content; therefore, reader discretion is advised. All in all, this book has the potential to be talked about and admired for centuries.
