Libby and Mal are finding their growing feelings for each other rather uncomfortable, especially since Mal isn't quite alive. The beekeeper, Mal, didn't know he could have feelings that weren't negative and Libby's boyfriend Robert was more than an annoyance she needed to get rid of. When she met Mal and his extraordinary bees things began taking several turns and not always for the better.

Libby seems to be an ordinary girl growing up on a farm surrounded by almond trees, fruit trees, and people who love her. She has had a debilitating illness but enjoys the arrival of the beekeepers so much that she forces herself to go out to the almond grove to see them set up their hives. She is particularly intrigued by one of the beekeepers who she comes to suspect is hiding a terrible secret.

In this first book in The Puzzle Box Trilogy, K. M. Carroll has shifted the vampire tropes into still another possibility. She has created a new set of rules and backed it with a new science making it sound plausible for Libby to believe. She even makes it something the reader can agree with. However, the story is not about the science, it is about discovery, falling in love, and surviving evil, even from the inside. It is also about a new vision of magic and the important role even something as small as a bee can play in the balance of life and survival.

The characters are rich and interesting. The story is fresh and exciting and I long for more from Libby and Mal to hurry into print. Emotions are strong and though the characters are surprised by the directions they take, the reader understands and wants more. Even the fog plays a role in this fast paced story of struggle, the fight against evil, and falling in love even when it seems unwise.

Though I was already reading another story that I found difficult to put down, I tried this one and I haven’t wanted to put it down either. The situation is so intriguing and the story is so fast that it was over way too soon and the next book will be so hard to wait for. Readers will be holding their breaths waiting to experience the final outcome.

I’ll go back to the other book but I have to give this one a 4 out of 4 simply because it is so clever and easy to read. And, oh the bees!

Hello, this is a review of the wrong book i'm afraid. This is for the first book in the puzzle box trilogy, not Sunspots. I'd happily take the 4 stars, but I think the book the stars were intended for probably deserves them. :)
