Once A God (Book One: The Spirit of Miriam) by Victor A. Wilkie
Jonah Atkins is a very powerful man, however he wasn't always. Coming from a very poor family and having lived through abuse, pain, sadness and death in his childhood, he knew he must change the path of his life. He built a company that ultimately made him the wealthiest man in the world.
Jonah begins courting and eventually marrying Mae Ridge, who comes from a very wealthy family. She gives to him three lovely children, Michael, Charlie and Lara. They had the perfect life, that is until tragedy struck when Lara, their only daughter, passes away suddenly. This brings back Jonah's past and it rocks his world. He once again metamorphs himself, into someone unrecognizable.
After the death of Lara, Jonah uses his work as a sort of an escape. During a business trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee, he becomes snowbound in his hotel room. He decides for whatever reason to walk across the street for a cup of coffee. As fate would have it, this would be the moment Miriam Barkley would walk into his life and change his life forever.
The character development was wonderful in this story. You too will eventually love Miriam and little Charlie and feel horribly sorry for Mae and even Michael. The characters in this story go through a lot of heartache and pain. You will especially see the affects of this pain through Mae's eyes.
Unfortunately, I personally can only rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. There are a couple things that bother me about this book. The first being that Mae Atkins, Jonah's wife, calls him "Mister" and this made me roll my eyes constantly. I am not really sure why this irks me, but it does. I just feel that after the length of their ten month courtship and then their marriage, surely by now she can call him by his first name. If I had to guess, the author may be trying to use this term of endearment to sort of show Jonah's dominance.
The second thing that I had a hard time with was the fact that Miriam and Jonah were in instant love. I can't stand this in books. I understand that this is fiction, but I like my fiction to somewhat relate to real life. Of course, this is my own personal opinion and no offensive to the author, I just have a hard time believing that someone can look at someone and instantly say "Wow I love this person".
Overall, it was a very good read. I did enjoy it and I am interested in seeing where the story will lead, because this is a series. It does somewhat leave you with a cliffhanger. I have my own theories as to what I think happen, but I guess we will have to read on to find out for sure.
