Rooftop Sunsets & Cocktails: A Story about Finding Lasting Love in New York Cityby Alexa Fernandez
When a twenty something year old woman from the suburbs moves to New York City in hopes to live out her dreams, what could possibly go wrong? Desiree Lockhart had always wanted to be an actress, so New York City seemed like the perfect place to get started. However, things do not always go as planned.
Desiree has had many jobs over the years trying to stay afloat in the Big Apple. Jobs that include waitressing, work out videos, working in retail and refurbishing furniture, but none of those actually involved acting. Along with her is her best friend and landlord, Olivia who was a nightclub singer that dreamed of being a chef. George is also one of Desiree's sidekicks, who is a twenty-nine year old doctor that is following into his father's footsteps.
Desiree is now newly single after a few mistakes she made that gave Seth, her ex-fiancee, reasons to end the engagement. Over the course of the book, we follow Desiree and her three friends all over the city and begin to find themselves along the way.
The book is somewhat fast paced and is a pretty quick read, having only 206 pages. It is classified as a romance novel but it is not a lovey-dovey book until really the very main end. It doesn't focus solely on the characters love lives or sexual encounters, but actually learning how to grow as a person after trials and conflicts help mold you. The characters were pretty well rounded. You will want to be friends with George and Olivia right along with Desiree.
For me there were two downfalls of the book. The first one being that there were several formatting issues. For example, on the Kindle version, on page 39, there is a random page break right in the middle of a sentence. There were also times where two different characters were speaking and it would not start a new line, but continue on in the same paragraph and to me, that was a little confusing. Also, in the very beginning, one of the first things that I noticed was that the author would jump back and forth from writing numbers in the numeric form and then again in written form.
The second thing that I did not like about this book is that in the beginning of the book, it makes you believe that Desiree is so desperate to win back the love of her ex-fiancee Seth. She was Facebook stalking his new girlfriend and went through great links to be with him again. Almost half through it somewhat switches tone to set up for what would be the ending and its almost like the whole "Seth" incident didn't even happen after being such a big part in the beginning.Once we drew closer to the end of the book, it was more evolved and the characters are a lot more mature. Then when we reached the ending, it came so abruptly and that's when you really want more from the author, or at least I did.
In my opinion, the events that happened closer to the ending would have been better somewhere in the middle and then continue on from there. The reason being, the events at the end have more promise and it makes you really want to know what happen in the future with Desiree. I also thought that it should have went into more detail about certain characters emotions.
All in all, it was a fairly good read and I rate it a 3 out of 4 Stars!
