The Saltwater Ghost by Shiela Jane is a mystery novel centered on a man named Alden who is a professor in India. One day he gets the opportunity to go back to his hometown of Saltwater for a teaching position at the local college. While going home is easy for most for Alden it means facing the ghosts of his past; ghosts he wishes he can forget about. Meanwhile Saltwater is the center of one creepy urban legend involving starcrossed lovers and suicide which leads to the town being haunted by a Mi’kmaq indian girl named Lainey Mercer. What does Alden’s past have to do with the local ghost story? That I am going to leave up to you to find out.
I am a huge mystery buff, and I love ghost stories so this one was really up my alley. I also love surprise endings/plot twist endings which this one most definitely had. Seriously kudos to you Ms. Jane you made a really good plot twist. I mean it, it really through me for a loop. I also really liked the character growth seen in Alden. At first he was just this man who wanted nothing more than to leave his past in the past where it belongs but as the book went on he learned that he couldn’t he simply had to face it and face it he did. Unfortunately, though, there is one thing I really didn’t like.
I found that the chapters were a little choppy in that the transition from one chapter to the other wasn’t as smooth as it could be. It threw me off a little and just ruined the experience of reading it a little bit when I would get into the story and then BOOM next chapter I was somewhere completely different. I actually had to train myself to ignore them in order to keep reading. It worked but I really wish I hadn’t had to do that.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4.
I rate it this way because there were many grammar issues and only a few typos here and there. Other than that it was a great story. Like I said chapters were a bit choppy but other than that is was a fantastic read, or at least an intriguing idea. I also rated it this because if I run out of new things to read I’d consider rereading this one. Now that’s saying a lot.
I think other mystery lovers, and lovers of ghost stories will really enjoy this one. Of course I don’t advise reading it to anyone 10 years and under for obvious reasons. It is an adult book meant to be read by mature eyes. I even recommend this to a read who just needs something different to read; trust me it’ll be very refreshing.
