Review of Reconfigurement

[Following is a volunteer review of "Reconfigurement" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
Have you ever wondered how to plan ahead financially for your best future and retire comfortably while still enjoying life in the present? E. Alan Fleischauer shows us how this is possible in his book Reconfigurement. “Life is too darn short to be toiling away at something you don’t really care for.” This short but comprehensive guide covers a wide range of topics, spanning from life insurance and annuities to career choices and retirement planning.
The defining features of Reconfigurement are its blend of in-depth financial expertise and relatable storytelling. The author uses his extensive experience in finance to simplify complex financial topics and make them accessible to a broad audience. The book takes a multifaceted approach that, in addition to promoting wise financial moves, pushes for a well-rounded approach to life that respects your human needs.
The book organizes the information logically, starting off with the most basic and working it’s way up to the more complex topics so you don’t find yourself in the deep end. The book makes these concepts accessible by talking to you as if you were having a conversation, and it includes other resources for more information. I thought that the fact that the book was written in large font was a thoughtful touch. Even though some of the topics were dry, even by the author’s own admission, his conversational tone and sense of humor breathed life into the book and made it enjoyable enough to read to the end.
I thought the book was very well-written (kudos for the exceptional editing), and the information was well-supported and made sense. If I had to criticize the book, I’d point out two things: firstly, I wish the book had a more detailed table of contents, especially since the chapters were given titles. Having those titles included in the table of contents would have allowed for easier reference when needed, rather than having to click each hyperlink to confirm the topic. Secondly, while I enjoyed the author's writing style, at times it felt overly casual, especially with some of the more serious topics. That being said, the book deserves nothing short of 5 out of 5 stars.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about managing their personal finances and plan more effectively for their future. While the book does focus on people nearing their retirement, I believe much of the information it contains would be useful to everyone, especially the sections on choosing a career and investing.
