The Banned Book about Love is a non-fiction piece of writing that is very short, but has a strong message. The book is about the way that humans should treat one another, without judgement and with the love that we were created to have. This is not a “Bible-thumping” book, but it’s a writing about human interaction, human faith, and the love we all have deep inside for one another. Hughes even states that the reader doesn’t have to be Atheist, Christian or any other religion to respect the fact that each person deserves to be loved, no matter their choices in life.

The first chapter had me a bit angry. The subject of the chapter had me thinking, “I can’t finish this, because it isn’t what I believe, it’s not right.” but as I continued to read, I noticed that Hughes wanted that sort of reaction from the readers. There was no way that the book’s focal point was going to work if he didn’t outright upset people from the beginning, making them want to read more and fully understand his point about keeping a level head and treating all people with the same love as anyone else. There are so many people that get upset with a book and then put it down, but the way Hughes invoked the emotion was effective because it made me want to read more.

Hughes uses a current person that is subject to the news as an example of a person who the majority of community members would not want to have out in the general public, or even alive (for those really angry people). This person could be switched out in the future for those other “bad examples” of humans, for lack of better words. That real-life example creates an emotional reaction, which was what stood out for me when reading. I could relate this to someone in the media five years ago that people wanted to have punished for their actions, and I think my parents would even relate to this situation with another person that was in the media when they were young adults. It is a topic that is relevant to everyone because it’s about humanity, not religion.

I found this writing to be very effective, even though it was a short writing. Some authors think they have to write a really long piece in order to get all the details in there, but Hughes did a great job of getting the jist of his point in such a short amount of time. On the other hand, I wanted to read more about his thoughts and ideas about humanity, the people in the news and the judgment towards them, as well as the continuance of what he has already written. The Banned Book about Love is great the way it is, but it left me wanting more. If he writes more under this title, I’d be likely to purchase this book once it is published and sold in stores.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4
The Banned Book about Love was well written, with little grammatical errors, and the chapter breaks were planned accordingly and made sense. It was written in a way that was easy and interesting to read, with different page breaks depending on the tone Hughes wanted to set with readers. I had a hard time finding things that was “wrong” with his writing; this was a very enjoyable read. I’d like to hear more about this topic from Hughes, because the reading was less than 20 pages.
