The Banned Book About Love is a short book written by Scott Hughes that honestly is not my cup of tea to read. It’s not to say that the book doesn’t make you think about right and wrong or what love is. It certainly does all those things, but it also comes across as something that would be offensive to most women.

The reason this book was particularly hard to swallow is due to the fact of how easily it is said that someone who raped a woman, or even someone who has beaten children and raped them is loved by the author. As someone who is not religious in any way, and therefore has no reason to believe in the words of the bible, the message of this book did not resonate with me in any way and rather made me upset instead of teaching me much of anything.

Putting aside the content that offended me deeply, the rest of the book was full of good points. For example, there was a point in the book where the author mentions that people wanting for wrongdoers to spend more time in jail and then letting them loose is perhaps being hateful and not looking at the real problem. The fact that we let murderers or rapists out after a certain amount of time shows that we jail them because we are angry. Scott reminds us that time doesn’t magically change them from not continuing the acts that they performed that landed them arrested in the first place, in my opinion there are two solutions to this. One which is mentioned in the book, not letting them leave and paying more into funds to make sure less violence is occurring in the public. Then there is also my thought: Why let them live at all?

As I was reading The Banned Book About Love, that thought occurred to me several times. Why let them live? Why let cruel people be taken care of by our government’s money? Why arrest marijuana smokers for illegal possession for years and let a rapist or molester leave a jail cell for three months? It doesn’t make any sense!

I wish I could say that the message of this book changed that thought process for me, but it never did. I only became angrier and angrier with the world in addition to what the author’s view on love is. I think perhaps others may appreciate the message better than I would. I will rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars. I would not pick it up again.
