I was intrigued to read The Banned Book About Love right from the time I had read its description on the website. A book that focuses on sexual assault and donates 10 cents for each download, then what made people take this book so negatively. I must say that in the beginning, I needed a lot of patience to go on reading the book because it was easy to judge Scott Hughes for showing concern for someone who had assaulted a woman without her consent. But I didn’t want to be like every other reader who had judged the book harshly.
The opening of the book talks about the incidence of Brock Turner who was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman with intent to rape, sexually penetrating a foreign object while the woman was intoxicated and sexually penetrating a foreign object in an unconscious woman. The author speaks of the uproar that took place in the virtual social world because Brock Turner was sentenced to a light punishment in comparison to other criminals.
Scotts Hughe has addressed the issue of hate in an extremely diplomatic manner and anyone reading this book will have to read it with an open mind while keeping all judgements aside. I also liked that by using this incident he has drawn a clear picture of how quick people are to erupt on the social networks without trying to know the complete story. The Banned Book About Love does an effective job of influencing people to stay away from hate. It indirectly speaks about giving people unconditional love by considering the act of committing a sin bad rather than considering the person as a whole to be bad.
There were certain times in the book where I got slightly confused by certain statements and there was one time I wasn’t at all able to agree to what was being sad. I wasn’t able to agree when I read that the author doesn’t want Brock Turner to suffer because whatever the case was at the end of the day he had committed one of the worst crime. Also, if we look at unconditional love then even then unconditionally loving someone will allow us to punish them for their own good.
I will rate The Banned Book About Love 3 out of 4 stars because the author has addressed an important issue of hate using an extremely sensitive topic. It really requires one to have lots of guts to do that. Also, the way Scotts Hughe has conveyed his message requires a big round of applaud. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books that are based on taboos.
