[Following is a volunteer review of "Unicorns Know Magic" by Charles Adkins.]
Unicorns are fantastical creatures who two young siblings happen to live next door to. Come follow the adventures of these four unicorns and two human siblings in this children’s fantasy, Unicorns Know Magic by Charles Adkins.
This sweet children’s book has several commendable qualities. Firstly, the rhyming is such a soothing, fun way for children to read books. For another, I loved how the children and unicorns traveled to different countries. It helps expose children to different parts of the world, such as London and Paris, and the unicorns being in tune with others’ feelings adds a sweet touch. It was lovely to also see the unicorns completing chores around the house, which can be a positive motivator for any child.
If I had to choose an area of improvement, it would be a couple of scenes that seemed incomplete. At one point, the children express their concern that they may be concerned over their whereabouts. However, the next scene doesn’t address this and the children do not return home right away. While this wouldn’t significantly distract children from the story, it did catch my attention. The other scene was when the unicorns were cleaning the kids’ house, but mentioned that their mom’s feelings were hurt. It was unclear why their mom’s feelings would be hurt.
This fantasy-filled children’s picture book is one that has fun unicorn characters, some travel, and even a bit of humor. Its rhyming phrases and colorful pages will be sure to attract many children. Having found only one error, I can confidently say that this book was professionally edited. With all its merits, I give Unicorns Know Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
Unicorns Know Magic by Charles Adkins is a sweet, fun, and magical book that was an easy and well-flowing children’s book. Due to the rhyming and the length, I would recommend this book to preschool children and even lower elementary school-aged children. This would also be a fun read for parents to their children as a bedtime story, or even teachers to read aloud for their students. Teachers could even use those incomplete scenes as a way for students to continue and discuss what they believe happened.
