Magna Carta R.I.P.? Religious Freedom and the Church” by Jude Meritus offers a thoughtful examination of the current state of religious freedom and the Church of England as the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta approaches. The book argues that Magna Carta, and particularly the freedoms it afforded the English church, are under threat today from increasing secularism and political correctness.

Meritus structures the book around various “threats” to religious liberty, ranging from abortion and euthanasia laws to Islamist extremism to the rise of scientism. Each chapter examines evidence from recent policies, court cases, and cultural trends to build the case that the principles of Magna Carta are no longer respected in Britain. The author shares personal anecdotes from his life and faith journey to lend credibility and passion to his argument. While some examples may be debatable, overall Meritus makes a compelling case that Christianity faces mounting challenges to its historic role and influence in Britain.

The writing style is engaging, weaving together current events, biblical references, and historical context to present a cohesive narrative. The book provides meticulous chapter-by-chapter examinations of Magna Carta’s individual clauses. The editing is good; Meritus demonstrates extensive research yet balances erudition with readability. Some prior knowledge of Magna Carta, church-state relations, and biblical prophecy would deepen appreciation but is not prerequisite to following his line of reasoning. Debate surely remains around solutions, but few could dismiss the seriousness of the concerns raised. Meritus shows courage in calling the church to greater prophetic witness during a pivotal anniversary year. While not providing all the answers, the book stimulates important reflection on navigating faith in a rapidly changing culture. Both believers and open-minded readers seeking understanding of crucial societal questions will find it informative. With passion tempered by nuance, “Magna Carta R.I.P.?” offers a window into pressing issues facing religious liberty in Britain today.

In summary, Jude Meritus pens a well-researched and engaging critique of the challenges confronting religious freedom as the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta approaches. The book deserves thoughtful consideration from all interested in safeguarding the principles of liberty enshrined in that historic charter. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
