In this novel Behavior Beyond Analysis by Richard Van Doren, we once again follow Abel Haskins, who is now an agent-in-training with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Being a former vice cop in the Port City Police Department and a parish minister makes Haskins a great asset for his team in tracking down a serial killer with a ritualistic signature. The gruesome nature of the case begins to test our protagonist’s mental and spiritual fortitude. In addition, there’s a rising threat to his family and friends. Will he be able to ensure their safety while pursuing an elusive perpetrator referred to as the UNSUB (unknown subject)?

Despite the seriousness of the long but well-written and detailed storyline, it did not bore me at all, contrary to my first impression. There are little moments of reprieve from all the emotionally heavy parts that leave room to breathe for a moment before the next part unfolds. The flow builds up the tension slowly until it gets into a fast-paced tone. I liked that a lot.

If you’re a fan of crime drama shows like Criminal Minds, this will be a great read. Just note that you can’t unread something you’ve read. So, if you’re someone like me who easily pictures in their mind anything they read, just be warned of the graphic descriptions and disturbing or sensitive topics.

Aside from the suspense and thrilling tale of fighting horrific crimes in pursuit of justice, Behavior Beyond Analysis also delves into the philosophical aspect of the never-ending battle between good and evil. You might find yourself wondering just how the world has become with the rampant immorality, or imagine for a second if you’re in the shoes of the lucky souls that survived the evilness of humanity.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed every bit of this book, from the tear-inducing and maddening revelations to the well-deserved poetic justice.
