The Banned Book about Love is a booklet written by Scott Hughes on his views regarding the meanings and feelings of love and hate he himself and humanity face towards people who cause others harm, being it rape, molestation, murder or other crimes.

In this booklet the word Love is used quite a bit and I think that people who have read the booklet might have interpreted the sense in which the word Love was used wrong or different. Their opinion might also have been influenced or changed because of this.

After having read the booklet and having had experience in my own life with people who have been violated in a sexual way and I have also dealt with people who has been on the wrong side of the law, so I understand both the views of people who say that they feel hate towards these criminals and want to punish them as well as the writers view on fair justice and love towards them. Hate or disgust is a feeling that I’m sure most of us have had before, seeing that the criminals violate their victims basic human right of safety. On the other hand I also understand the writers point of view that he ‘loves’ all people even the criminals. In this context I understand that he wants fairness and equal justice.

The word compassion might have been a more appropriate word choice than the word love, as love is quite a strong word and brings up a variety of emotions in different situations. Readers would have or will probably relate to the booklet and understand the writers view in a better or different way if the word compassion was used instead of love.

I don’t think the writer wants people to think that he supports these criminals, but rather that he wants, as I said previously fairness and justice. Everyone does make a mistake and by helping those people to make a change in their lives will ultimately help the world.

This booklet was an eye opener and more people should start to change their thinking towards what justice really is. What I also got from this booklet is, if people’s views don’t change, then the world will not change for the better

I will give this booklet 3 out of 4, as I think the word choice could have been a bit different.
