The Banned Book about Love is a book that more closely resembles a thesis paper. The author, Scott Hughes, discusses the difficulties of loving everyone in the world, regardless of who they are and what they do. In the first chapter, titled “I Love Brock Turner”, Hughes describes how a swimmer, named Brock Turner, was convicted of almost raping an intoxicated woman. Hughes explains that many people hate Brock Turner because of this conviction, but that he himself does not hate the man because of his ability to love. The underlying theme of the book seems to be: Love or hate; what is easier?

The book is well written, in that the grammar and paragraphing are pretty spot-on. However, I must say that I did not enjoy this book, for quite a few reasons. The first reason is that it does not read like a book, even though it has chapter breaks. The book is 14 pages in length, and, as I stated in my first paragraph, closely resembles a thesis paper. Each chapter is roughly 2-3 pages long, almost unnecessary for a book this short.

In the second chapter, Hughes refers to his topic as “boring”. Calling the topic you are discussing “boring” causes your reader to assume you do not care about what you are talking about, and your reader will lose interest in your writing all together. That is about when I lost interest in The Banned Book, but I continued to read so that I could write this review.

The title does not really reflect the topic of the book. I do not know if he changed the title because of the issues he had in the beginning, what with people accusing him of being a supporter of rape, but this title does not suit the subject matter. The sentence that really stood out to me was, “Let me ask you: which is easier?” when contrasting and comparing love and hate. Because Hughes discusses the differences of loving and hating people so much throughout the text, I believe he should change the title. If he changes the title to something based off the previous question, it would reflect the material better, and more people would be interested to read it.

One more thing I noticed was the use of quotes. There is a pretty lengthy quote from Dr. M. L. K. Jr., and while it is a good quote, it is lengthy. When using long quotes—a quote longer than 3 lines—in a text, the quote should be a blocked quote, which is smaller in font and more centered on the page. It takes up less space, and is not a big distraction to the reader.

While I did not enjoy the book, anyone who enjoys lengthy discussion about why it is harder to love than to hate will. I give it a 2 out of 4 and wish Scott Hughes the best of luck.
