"Sent to Watch" by David J. Lebenstein is a historical science fiction novel set in post-Napoleonic England, offering a unique blend of alien intrigue and Earth's rich history. The narrative follows extra-terrestrial spies assigned to monitor key nations, where they are tasked with observing Earth's cultural and technological evolution, providing a fresh perspective on historical events while navigating a complex plot.
The author's commitment to historical accuracy shines through, immersing readers in the intricacies of the post-Napoleonic era. The story unfolds against the backdrop of significant events, from the rise of the Duke of Wellington to political struggles for Catholic emancipation and the regency of George IV. The author weaves in Princess Charlotte's tragedy and details about the royal family, creating a rich tapestry of historical events and a vivid portrayal of both privileged and less fortunate individuals during this period.
The novel's educational value extends beyond Earth's history, touching on American history, classical music, and the 19th-century movement to unify the German-speaking world. Including physics, with the author performing calculations for spacecraft accelerations and rates of speed, adds a layer of scientific authenticity to the story. It was very interesting to read.
While the initial pages move deliberately to acclimate readers to the Confederation, the glossary proves invaluable in navigating the dual identities of the characters. The absence of explicit content makes the novel suitable for those seeking a compelling narrative without explicit romantic scenes.

My rating is an absolute 5 out of 5. I completely devoured this book. I loved it! If you're interested in historical fiction and science fiction, then you come to the right place. It caters to those with a thirst for knowledge, combining science fiction and space flight with a riveting love triangle. Leben-stein's creation deserves a resounding five-star rating for its unique blend of history, science fiction, and the exploration of human nature through the lens of alien observers.
