The Banned Book About Love
By Scott Hughes

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars due to the use of "tl;dr" not explained.

I don't feel this book should have been banned; however, I can see a reader being offended if they don't read the book carefully in order to understand what the author is saying and taking statements completely out of context.

The book is about love and hate and the amount of effort it takes to achieve one over the other. There is a fantastic quote by the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King that beautifully reflects exactly what the author is trying to say: there is no sense in hatred, only love.

I found the writing style to be bold and frank. The overall tone is genuine, raw emotion as if the author is pouring out his passion and urging the reader to see the wrong in dehumanizing a person simply because they did something that society disagrees with. I agree with the author's point of view because all people - regardless of origin - are connected in one way or another. Whether it be by ancestry, culture, or otherwise. We should all love one another no matter the circumstances - that is the core of humanity. The author proves his point by quoting some religious passages. The author admits that he doesn't understand how one can call themselves christian when they can say they don't love their fellow man because he's committed a crime. I felt as though the author implores the reader to realize that everyone deserves love, no matter if they've committed a crime or not.

The author challenges the reader to think about love on a broader scale. He asks thought-provoking questions that relate to a larger picture like: while fighting for more punishment on one side, why not fight for less on another? The author seems to create a balance between hate and love by discussing the opposite.

Overall, I recommend this book because it is a courageous account of how the author feels about humanity and the lack of humanity in many cases. It's a hard look at what society has become, and what needs to be done to change it. The book itself is not controversial; however, due to the negative attention it received, Amazon banned it. That fact alone is a scary reality of the world we live in today.
