[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an exciting and detailed story depicting the start of a new beginning for young Galen, who left his war-stricken country for the fantasy kingdom of Voulhire. The narrative also explores characters like King Wilhelm, who rules the kingdom, the rivalry surrounding his reign, and the conflicts within his Mianoran council.
The writer narrates Galen's journey from the land of the princes to Voulhire by ship, describing the sights upon his arrival at the small city in Voulhire, Magnum Caelum. Galen meets his deceased uncle's executor, Rowan, who assists him in adjusting to his new environment. Will this new phase favor Galen, or will it mark the beginning of his woes? As Galen manages the forge, he must learn the ropes of becoming a blacksmith before the money inherited from his uncle runs out.
I appreciate that the author provides a list of terms and meanings, aiding in understanding the story's vocabulary. The uniqueness of the narrative, diverging from typical fantasy, is noteworthy. While the story's progression is slow initially, improving in the second half, impatient readers may find it challenging, given the reduced attention span reported in recent research. The extended descriptions and narrations, though, could pose a problem for a younger audience.
Despite the slow start, the book is a great read. I rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars for its originality, well-crafted twists, and excellent editing. I found no errors while reading.
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy out-of-the-ordinary fantasy, as it breaks away from the conventional fantasy world. Fans of engaging fictional works with elements of mystery and magic will find this well-thought-out series captivating.
