[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Firstly, the chapters were short, and that makes getting to the end of the chapter motivation for the next. There's definitely room for improvement as it relates to bringing the information across in a way that's simple and can be easily understood by everyone. I was sometimes confused with the conversations that took place, but all in all, I had fun reading.
I am basically brought into a dystopian society where there is magic and witchcraft. The novel has different perspectives in which it gives a detailed outline of their issues and what became of them. For Galen, whose island had been at war for most of his life, he jumped at the opportunity to leave and go elsewhere as soon as he got the chance. The first encounter so far is with the Captain, who defended Galen from the soldiers who wanted to kill him or to prevent him from leaving the island, who dispatched them with ease.
The protagonist, Galen, is now trying to navigate his way through the kingdom of Voulhire. We arrived at a holiday parade where King Wilhelm is seen greeting and hosting a banquet. Though it seems as if the people love and resect him, the ones closest to him seem to either be envious or loose-mouthed in a sense compared to the utter reverence kings normally demand. It might've been possible, since King Wilhelm seemed relaxed, cordial even when speaking with his people.
We now learned Galen's uncle was a blacksmith who died the week he boarded the ship to leave the island. We also see that he may have known magic since, based on the diary/book he left for Galen, it doesn't look or sound like an ordinary book. Also, it seems the king had some reason not to kill Meldorath, but for some reason I think the old troublesome man has some connection to the previous lord and maybe is just trying to start up trouble.
Marshus reminds me so much of Loki and I have realized that as much as it seems like some people are mages, most people are not educated on it, and it's led me to believe maybe regular people can also be mages and warlords.
Apart from Galen, my most admired character in this book is Lord Eldus. Why? Because he loves what he does and truly wants to make Hillshire better and is really genuine in the way he goes about doing so. I gave this book a 5 out of 5 because, for me, it was something different to my usual romance genre. It literally took me on a journey with all the characters, and it's like I was physically in the story experiencing all that they experienced. I highly recommend this book if you're into magic and mystery and want to be taken on a journey.
