Nightlord: Sunset is a great vampire book and I am looking forward to reading the sequels. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The world and the characters were multifaceted and well honed. Eric is a mild mannered professor who wakes up with a hangover to find that he has been changed into a vampire. He no sooner adapts to his new life when he finds himself "through the rabbit hole" into a completely different world. This new world resembles a medieval England with the addition of magic, demigods and supernatural beings. We follow our hero as he learns about his new world and while trying to avoid those who would pursue him because he is a Nightlord or vampire.
In the stereotypical vampire literature, before the recent Young Adult Romances of the past few decades, the vampire was painted as a monster with an indiscriminant thirst for blood. But in this book, vampires actually serve a purpose in the circle of life. They are supposed to kill those who are truly wish to die. No matter what your personal opinion of mercy killing may be, this certainly makes the protagonist a much more sympathetic character.
I appreciated the fact that this vampire had a conscious. Although he was a little too cavalier with his reaction to his first killing, the rest of the time it he would only kill in the heat of battle when someone was trying to kill him, or take the life of someone who truly wished to die.
Many of the characters were very interesting. I really enjoyed most of them. Most of the characters were multidimensional and some were great comedy relief.
This book had the potential to earn 4 stars. Unfortunately, the story was way too long. Only Tolkien and Rowling wrote books this long that were truly worth the time to read. Unfortunately, this may make many readers feel it is too long to finish. I feel that the book needed one more draft to tighten up the story. There were also a few inconsistencies with a couple characters using language and turns of phrase that would come from our time instead of its own. Also the story is written in a diary format, but it doesn’t really work. These issues plus the occasional typographical error that we often see in these books make me wish that this novel had been accepted by a major publishing house and had the benefits of a professional editor. For these reasons this book is rated 3 out of 4 stars.
