Nightlord:Sunset is the first book in a series of vampire novels by Garen Whited. Whited´s take on the genre is unique and refreshing. It starts in the typical way, an innocent man who doesn´t believe in vampires meets one and gets turned, but this is where the similarity with every other vampire novel ever written ends. What comes next is a tumble into a parallel world and a fantasy quest through every other fantasy theme out there. This is the kind of story that certainly surprises the reader and definitely makes them sound mad when they try to explain it to a friend.

Nightlord borrows elements from many different themes to create a very rare type of novel. Our confused hero, Erik, takes us on a journey away from the modern world we know into a new land with new possibilites and new dangers. It´s unpredictable, addictive and there´s so much included that any reader will find something to suit their tastes.

I read the sample and went on to read the whole book. Nightlord starts slowly, but within a few chapters, I had to rethink everything I´d ever thought about vampire novels. Based on it´s description, I never would have chosen it if it hadn´t been book of the month. However, it turned out to be a most delightful read.

One of it´s strengths is Erik, the protagonist, who wakes up as a confused vampire. He is your typical modern day man and throughout the whole adventure he remains loveable and easy to relate to. He´s a kind hearted man and you genuinely wish the best for him and his friends.

The biggest strength is the writing style. The author weaves together the different worlds and the different themes so seamlessly that it becomes incredibly easy to believe it all. Nothing feels out of place and every detail is connected and explained so there are no unanswered questions or events.

The only aspect of the book that I didn´t like was the language used in certain conversations. It was sometimes too modern and didn´t fit with the characters and surroundings involved at the time. This, added to a few mistakes missed during the proofreading made it uncomfortable at certain points.

Nightlord is very well written but gives an unsatisfactory ending. It is clearly designed to make you read the rest of the series and so for those not willing to do that, they receive a very disappointing ending for their much loved hero.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot more than I had anticipated. The writing style is good, the story is strong and it refreshes a much worn out genre. I rate this book 3 out of 4. I would definitely recommend it to friends but I would be selective as to which friends. It´s definitely going to be a love it or hate it book and although I enjoyed it much more than I expected, I won´t be reading the rest of the books in the series.
