For the Love of Suzanne by Kristi Hudecek- Ashwill
Suzanne is a young woman madly in love with her high school sweetheart. They married right after graduation and Beau had changed. He beat her each time he came home from work, she would cover it up from her friends at work. However, she could not cover it up the night she told him she was pregnant. He took of her accusing her of cheating and then stormed out. Suzanne woke the next morning with ever attention of leaving for her parents when the deputy showed up at her door with news that her husband was involved in a freak accident and died. The next few days just crawled by Beau’s family came and went, she told them of her pregnancy and promised to keep contact. One day she just could not take it and took off on the road trip. Suzanne ran her car as fast as it would go, something jumped in front of her car, and she swerved flipping her car coming to a stop on its top. She clambered out, but could not recognize anything around. She heard what she thought was hooves in the distance, she loved horses, but did not know of any ranches local. A tall man dressed in old Indian garb stood before her, commanding her to shush, she wanted to see him, he spoke in a different language, she tried to talk to him, and finally Black Fox (or Cody as is known by the soldiers) did give in and speak to her, and to her disbelief he spun a story that she was back in a different time, entirely 1860. The story continues from there and they fall in love with each other, he saves her from his chief, who vows to kill her and un-born child, and fights to get her back to her time, and to whom he suspects is her husband waiting, though at the time she does return, she has her daughter, though she thinks that she leaves Cody behind. She drives the area in which her accident happened over and over looking for him. She believes she will never find him, but one day he comes to view and she learned that he had been here the whole time, he grows accustom to her ways and they finally both get their happily ever after.
I loved this story line, it was a timeless take on a forbidden love, and love overcomes all. I feel immediately in love and pity for Suzanne, her abuse that she overcomes and the fact that she fought back and did everything she could to protect her unborn baby, it was wonderful! It was well written and really teleported you back to the 1800’s in both language and description of the terrain.
I did not really understand how Suzanne was transported from 2015 to 1800’s and back again, or how Cody was able to travel with her when she was returned to her time. I honestly thought at first it was a dream that she was going through, and was going to wake up in the hospital. I would have really liked that part to be more explained.
I give this read a 3 out of 4-star review because of the confusion I had by the time traveling. This book would be great for the adult woman, even feminist.
