[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies
Author: Mathew Tysz
Rating - 4/4, 5/5
It is a fantasy fiction with plots and subplots. The book opens with Galen Bray, a refugee from a war-torn land who inherits his great uncle’s forge in Voulhire. The beginning is all about how he adapts to his new place. There is a lot of description about the war torn land, Voulhire and the entire kingdom.
After Galen Bray, Eldus Alderman is introduced. He becomes the lord of the town of Hillport. His work here is to develop the town, which was formerly under two lords, Orlin and Meldorath, both cruel in their own ways.
The word out is that Meldorath is dead, but curious things keep happening.
Meanwhile, Galen starts getting used to his new life with his friend Rowan, both unaware of what is happening in the rest of the kingdom.
The book mainly revolves around Galen and Eldus and we get occasional glimpses into the lives of the other characters.
The world-building is just brilliant, as is the explanation of the various places and characters. When a character or a place is introduced in a chapter, Mathew Tysz explains it further in greater detail in the following chapter. The details are woven so finely and brilliantly into the story that there is no time to feel bored.
It is one of those fast-paced books that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think that you have the answer to one question, the author throws another curveball.
The characters are well-developed, and their stories unfold gradually. There are two parts of the story. The first part is about Galen Bray and his world, and the second is about Eldus Alderman and his world.
I wish I had had more time with the characters and had got to know them better before the author snatched them away. That left me wanting a little more.
But despite this, I loved the book. It has everything that I love in a fantasy – humor, magic and action. You won’t be able to put it down once you start reading it.
I am now looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
