28 Disastrous Dates was truly one of my favorite reads of 2023. This book was relatable on such an incredible level that I felt almost like I was having a conversation with my friends instead of reading a memoir. I found Poppy Mortimer's writing style to be very casual and easily digested while also being well-detailed. This is a book that I immediately recommended to my sister, my mom, and many of my friends.

As a young woman also navigating the uncomfortable, strenuous, and disastrous dating world, Mortimer made me feel as though I were sharing stories and giggles among fellow young women. These stories share the vulnerable side of searching for a relationship that is often forgotten, ignored, or overlooked. This vulnerability strongly reinforced the knowledge that everyone goes through silly trials and tribulations to find love and you are not alone in your journey.

If I were to make any recommended changes to this book, I would encourage a portion of the book to be dedicated to the long-term relationships that the author had in between some of the detailed dates. I would have loved to have been provided with insight into the good, the bad, and the ugly of her successful relationships. This type of inclusion would provide readers with even more relatable content and demonstrate that the kinds of antics Mortimer endured on these dates, don't necessarily stop if you continue seeing someone.

Mechanics

Throughout the book, Mortimer intentionally omits any profanities that may have actually occurred in the real-life dialogue. She has instead replaced them with a "bleep" placeholder, which in her own words, is an opportunity for the reader to add their own flair to the stories. This book does mention sexual situations and encounters, but does not delve into details which leads me to rate this book as being a 1 out of 5 on the scale of sexual content. I believe this book to have been professionally edited as there were only a few errors I found while reading. As a whole, I give this book a 4 out of 5. I truly loved this book and consider it one of my favorite reads of 2023.
