Northern Umbrage is a thriller written by Dennis N. Lorenz. It tells the story of a small town haunted by a mysterious beast and an unlikely hero who is ready to put his life at risk to save the town. Buc is a post-doctoral candidate researching in environmental pathology. He is broke and is looking for work. When he gets the chance to investigate the reason for the massive deaths of fish in a small town called Eagle River, he jumps up at the chance. Eagle River proves to be just as idealistic as he expected. The town is small but beautiful, and the townsfolk are friendly and welcome him warmly. But danger awaits them all.

Buc’s investigation leads him to Sarah, a taxidermist and a museum curator. Together, they discover that a strange beast is prowling the land, and it is the reason for all the dead fish in the river. Meanwhile, the beast becomes a dangerous hunter, and it is up to Buc to save Eagle River and all its residents.

Northern Umbrage is an amazing thriller that ties up a gripping plot and unforgettable characters with environmental issues and the consequences they have on all living beings. This book mainly discusses the impact of leaving industrial waste into water resources, contaminating and poisoning the beings who consume it.

I like how deep the characters in this book are. Even minor characters like Doc, Power Claw and Jamie are given elaborate backstories that make them real to readers. I loved the characters of Sarah and Buc and I enjoyed the romance that bloomed between them. Although it is not central to the story, their romance added layers to the plot, which made it more interesting.

There is nothing I disliked about the book. There is some graphic violence which is necessary for the story. There is some romance but no graphic erotic scenes. There is also some non-borderline profanity.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because this book is interesting, entertaining and also thought-provoking. I recommend this book to young adults and adults. I also recommend this book to readers who enjoy thrillers and science fiction.
