Nightlord: Sunset (Nightlord #1) written by Garon Whited is a paranormal fiction novel about a very ordinary man named Eric, who has his whole world turned upside down when he is unwittingly turned into a vampire by a beautiful woman that he met in a bar. He not only must learn how to be vampire but also to survive the people who are attempting to eradicate the vampire race when he finds himself in an alternate universe. Through Eric’s many adventures and mishaps he manages to make many enemies, but also countless friends who are willing to support him in his journeys.

The book starts out describing Eric’s normal, unassuming life as a professor attempting to go about his business when he gets roped into going out drinking at a local bar with a group of friends. He ends up getting much drunker than he intends to and wakes up in an unfamiliar place with a beautiful woman. As the day progresses he realizes that there is something perplexing happening to him. As soon as he comes to terms with the fact that he has indeed become a vampire, Eric is catapulted into a world both unfamiliar and full of magic and wonder.

At first the language in Nightlord is a little boring and rambling. I found the book hard to get into for the first few chapters with the way it would all of a sudden come to a halt due to trailing language and ideas instead of keeping up the flow of actions and events. The book finally took off once Eric had a set purpose, however either Eric or the author himself is easily distracted and tends to go off on quite a few tangents through out the rest of the novel.

Although there was a slow start to the book and random tangents, I did enjoy Nightlord very much. As the book progresses I found myself immersed in the magical realm of vampires, wizards, enchanted creatures, and the people who are attempting to annihilate Eric ‘s kind from the world. There is enough intrigue and supernatural occurrences to keep every paranormal fan entertained along with those who may not normally be paranormal fans.

The author does an excellent job of character development throughout the book, not only for Eric but also for the supporting characters. The villains are clearly marked against the heroes, although the heroes are definitely unconventional at times, leaving the reader to question what truly is the making of a real hero. Readers will find themselves cheering for Eric, hoping that he will triumph in the end.

I give Nightlord: Sunset 3 out of 4 stars, mainly due to the rambling language in the first part of the book and the random tangents through out the rest of it. Other than those two complaints, the book truly is a good read that introduces readers to a whole new brand of paranormal ideals and adventures. I would definitely recommend Nightlord to those looking for a novel to suck you in and take you on a grand adventure.
