[Following is a volunteer review of "Fresh Beginnings" by Leela Dutt.]
Today, close to a billion people are sitting in front of their television sets waiting for a few American guys to step onto the moon for the first time. Jennifer doesn't care because it's her father's burial today. She recognises all the people at the ceremony except a familiar-looking woman who seems to know lots of things about her. This woman communicates with her daughter on a black device Jennifer has never seen and talks about things no one has heard of like Amazon or Neil Armstrong. There is a bonobo who can predict human behavior better than the humans around him. A blizzard that lasts five days keeps a grandmother indoors with her grandchildren and something special happens afterwards. Fresh Beginnings by Leela Dutt is a compilation of several interesting short stories. All the stories are very funny and touching.
I enjoyed many things about this book. Apart from being funny, many of the stories were thought provoking. The book gripped me right from the start so that once I picked it up, it was hard for me to put it down. I was certainly sorry when I finished the last story in the book. My favourite story is the one written as a bunch of letters from the manager of a store to a problematic customer. Despite the multiple warnings, the customer ended up performing such outrageous antics that I just had to laugh. The editor did a phenomenal job. I found not a single grammatical or typographical error in the book. This added to the fun of reading. I also liked the illustrations in the book at the beginning of each story. Together with the titles, the illustrations tell us in summary what every story is about.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. For the aforementioned reasons, I rate this book five out of five stars.
I recommend Fresh Beginnings to those who like fiction or short stories. Those who want a laugh and a light read will definitely enjoy this book.
