[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz marks the inaugural volume in an enthralling series. This fictional work digs into the life of Galen, a resident of the Lands of the Princes who is forced to flee due to uncertainties surrounding leadership and the ravages of war.
In a narrative mirroring our political reality, the story unfolds in a land plagued by the tyranny of the Emperor of Lullabies. Seeking to prevent his four sons from overthrowing him, he grants each son their own territory, creating a warring landscape. Galen, a young man from The Land of Princes, inherits a new home in the free land of Voulhire. Accompanied by his uncle's executor, Roland, they embark on a journey to Magnum Caelum to establish Galen's forging skills and business, only to discover a deeper unfolding tale. Meanwhile, the king of Voulhire grapples with the aftermath of two foes, the deceased Orlin and the supposedly dead mage Meldorath, dispatching Lord Eldus to Hillport to aid its recovery and address the looming threat.
There are numerous aspects of the book that I found to be delightful. The inclusion of a diligently refined map of the kingdom showcases the author's creativity and provides readers with a vivid visual representation. Despite the extensive array of lands and characters within the kingdom, the author skillfully constructs the plot together, ensuring a seamless and engaging flow throughout. Among the cast, King Wilhelm stands out as one of my favorite characters, exemplifying wisdom in the execution of his duties.
In all honesty, I struggled to find any negative aspects of this book. It has undergone professional editing, resulting in a polished work, free from errors that could hinder the reading experience. Without reservation, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Its use of simple language and captivating storyline make it highly enjoyable, particularly for enthusiasts of the fantasy genre. Moreover, the inclusion of magical elements adds an extra layer of intrigue. I recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy and those seeking a captivating read that will transport them to the wondrous world of Voulhire.
