"We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz offers readers a captivating journey into the Voulhirian Kingdom, blending science fiction and fantasy elements. Galen Bray, the protagonist, inherits his uncle's steel business in Magnum Caelum, a region of the Voulhirian Kingdom. The narrative unfolds with political intricacies, mysterious stones, and the looming presence of the once-feared mage, Meldorath. Galen's transition from a war-torn homeland to the unfamiliar yet promising Magnum Caelum unfolds against a backdrop of economic challenges and historical complexities. Lord Eldus Alderman's investigation into the previous management's anomalies adds suspense, while the arrival of unusual stones and dancing soldiers hints at impending conflicts.
The book's strength lies in its enthralling plot and well-defined characters. Despite a slow start, Tysz masterfully develops Galen's character and introduces a unique set of supporting characters that add humor to every scenario. Though unusual, the political twists and negotiations effectively enhance the story's depth. However, some readers may find the initial lack of action a drawback, as the real intensity builds up towards the end with shocking twists and turns.
Tysz's writing is commendable, offering a professionally edited narrative that is easy to follow. The book's descriptive prowess shines in detailing the diverse landscapes and demography of Voulhire. The author's world-building skills are notable, providing readers with a clear mental image of each location, reminiscent of the meticulous detail in epic fantasy series.
The integration of fantasy elements, such as magic, adds a layer of excitement to the story. The action scenes, especially those involving magical elements, are thrilling and well-executed. The author successfully weaves a complex web of affairs reminiscent of George R. R. Martin's world-building in "A Song of Ice and Fire."
"We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" is a compelling start to the series. Tysz's ability to create a rich and detailed world, coupled with intriguing characters and unexpected plot twists, earns the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Whether you are a fan of science fiction, fantasy, or political thrillers, this book offers a diverse and immersive reading experience.
