My Trip to Adele
This book has three different stories woven through its plot line. Three individuals dealing with their individual issues in life. Their commonality lies in their love for Adele, whose lyrics act like a glue and are woven throughout each chapter. The end merges each of the three stories together as everyone targets to attend Adele’s concert in Verona, Italy.
Let’s focus on the concept of Adele first. I believe the author found her lyrics very provoking and interweaved them beautifully but honestly, the reader does not necessarily have to love Adele or be familiar with each song to comprehend or like this novel. It could be replaced by any singer in fact as long as the lyrics match. In fact, the common factor pertaining to the love for a singer’s song can be substituted easily by a famous author’s book or a lesser known actor’s dialogues, as long as the words match the situation of the person in question. So my advice to the reader is to try the book and not avoid it due to Adele being mentioned in the title.
The reader will also learn about multiple cultures, traditions, various rituals and different countries.
As for the individual stories: There is Elias, who goes through lengths to find his long lost love Malika, discovering turbulent truths on the way. Then there is Nadia, raising her son alone while fighting court battles and cultural traditions relating to an abusive ex-husband. Lastly there is Yaser who believes his marriage unbearable and tries to analyze his way out. The final chapter combines all three of the above stories to an end that I personally believe in some ways was rather unexpected.
The book in itself is commendable and I did enjoy it. I mention again, that the title can be misleading and Adele is more of a contributing factor than a main focus. But I must say at times the story seemed confusing simply because of the writing style. The language could have been a little more casual, easy or informal. Thus some of the conversations come off as rather stiff, especially amongst a married couple or a best friend. It did work between Nadia and her ex-husband because there was more disrespect involved than love and affection. The others though spoke to each other in quite a, unusual fashion, as if at a high tea party. But other than this factor, I do think it is quite a good book. Hence I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
