I read the book Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty. The book is about a young woman named Rynah who barely escapes the destruction of her home planet. She lifts off just in time, using what she believes to be an antiquated ship; one that her estranged grandfather refurbished and programmed. Along her journey, she is forced to work with several humans from different time periods on planet earth, as well as a feisty Artificial Intelligence equipped spaceship named Solaris. Rynah is not a terribly social person, and she does not appreciate her newfound ship mates. However, through some hard times and close calls, their friendships gradually strengthen.

Overall, Solaris Seethes was a very well written book. I would rate this book at 3 out of 4 stars. The writing style was very descriptive and detailed, which gives the reader a very clear depiction of the different scenarios in the book. However, there were some inconsistencies in the storyline in certain areas. For example, the author writes in chapter 8, page 91, about the royal purple grass on Rynah’s home planet. But, in chapter 8, page 111, the writer says that the now rotting grass had once been emerald green with a purple tint. Though they are slight inconsistencies, they can certainly be distracting.

The author of Solaris Seethes, Janet McNulty, does not seem to be a seasoned writer. However, this book certainly shows potential. I believe it would be a wonderful read for young readers (8-12 years) because of the simple plot line, easy to understand wording, and relatable characters. I would recommend this book to any young person that enjoys science fiction or fantasy fiction genres. As I understand it, Solaris Seethes is one book in a series. I will say, I would certainly read the other books in this series. The way that the author leaves the reader hanging at the end of Solaris Seethes definitely captures your attention and interest, even though it seems almost too abrupt.

As far as the ending of Solaris Seethes, I will say that (though certainly captivating as intended!) it left a bit to be desired. It seemed a bit too abrupt and “cut off” as though the author simply ran out of ideas! This, coupled with the too abrupt development of one character in particular, made for a somewhat rocky ending. If you had the second book sitting right in front of you and began reading it immediately following, it would almost feel like taking a commercial break from a television show.

All in all, Solaris Seethes was a very good book. I enjoyed the concept and the vivid imagery. Janet McNulty is a very promising author and I look forward to seeing more of her work in the future.

Great review OctoberSkye13. I read the book also. Did you happen to notice what movie the ending of the book was borrowed from? Not sure if it was subconsciously written by the author, but when I read it I was rather surprised. Maybe it was an homage to the movie. Don't want to give details and any spoilers so will leave it a that, interesting though.

Ever see Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan? YouTube the ending where Spock dies in the engine room from radiation while saving the ship. Then after a funeral ceremony they send his body off into space in a torpedo. Sound familiar?
