The Stealer of Memories by Mois Benarroch is a book that asks the question, " Are our memories really our memories, or are they mixed in with other people's memories"? We follow our main character, The Stealer of Memories, who can't help but grasp at other people's memories. Committing this act, makes him feel like a thief, although he doesn't do this intentionally. The more he does this, the more he realizes, that he can't differentiate his memories from those of other people. This hooked me from the start, but I was very disappointed, here's why.
First of all, the translation wasn't done very well. After having read that this book, among many other works of Mois Bennaroch, were translated into a plethora of languages, I expected to have a very clear understanding of what was going on in the story. But, instead of having that, this book was filled with incorrect grammar, and unfinished sentences. I found this to be unacceptable, because it was one of the main reasons I didn't like this book as much as I expected it to.
Another problem that I had with this book, which is due to the lack of work put into translating this book, was the lack of quotation marks. The main character had a handful of conversations, but it was hard to tell whether the main character was thinking to himself, or actually engaging with the other person. This made it harder to paint a mental picture of the whole book, which is never good when you're trying to read a Fantasy/Sci-Fi book.
Last but not least, let's discuss what I ACTUALLY LIKED about this book, and that was, how unique the story was. This is the first story I had ever read that followed a main character that actually STOLE the memories, not lock them away, or hide them from that person. I loved how Mois was able to portray the main character realizing that he didn't know which memories were his and which belonged to others. It had me thinking about my own memories, and I loved that this book was able to do that in the way that it was done.
Overall, this was a very promising book, but for the most part, it failed to deliver. The translation could have been done in a much better way, and I strongly believe Mois' editor could have fixed this issue before releasing this book to the public. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a thought provoking read in the future, and I hope that all of these issues get fixed. This book gets a 2 out of 4 star rating.
