Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty, a fiction book that is written in the third person perspective, is about a girl who loses everything she loves within a matter of minutes. With Klanor stealing the crystal that holds Rynah’s planet together, it’s hard to look past revenge when trying to figure out what to do next. Running for her life, Rynah remembers a space ship that her grandfather had built. She boarded Solaris only to find that she was not just a computer system. Solaris had been created by her grandfather to help Rynah get through this very particular problem.
Solaris advises Rynah of the prophecy behind six crystals. It calls for a warrior, a philosopher, an inventor, and a lover. Thankfully her grandfather had already figured out these certain people were needed and programmed Solaris to scan the planet Earth for such people. When Solaris pulls our heroes from their homes, from different continents, and from different time spans, the mission to obtain all six of the crystals begins.
I would give this book a 2 out of 4 rating. I like the plot line that has been established because it is an idea I have never heard of before. With this plot line, there are a lot of different routes the author can take. I love how personable Solaris is. I think she was my favorite character in this book. The constant action was interesting. I loved being able to visit the different planets! It really gives the author a lot of freedom to use description and create a world all of their own.
Why I give this book the lower rating was because I never felt close to the characters. I was never concerned about a single one except for Solaris. The first chapters that were designated to each character where awesome. I was really excited to see how each character developed throughout the story and what their part in it would be but the more the story went on I never connected. The closest characters I came to connecting with were Alfric and Brie since they were the ones constantly in the middle of the conflict. I think the constant action is what took away from the characters.
There was never enough time between attacks to get to know the characters. I had no care whether one character or another dies which means I’m not invested in the book. There was no mystery with the characters. It was just this is what they are, where they came from, and now they are here to help Rynah. So overall, I will not be reading the squeals and I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.
