If you like science fiction and action/adventure, you will enjoy Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty. I am not usually a fan of science fiction, but I did find myself really enjoying this book. I read the synopsis and it just grabbed my attention. This is a story about coming together for a common goal. The race is on to find data crystals and keep them out of enemies hands. Whoever owns the crystals can control a mega weapon that can pretty much destroy all planets.

Rynah is having a fabulous morning. Her boyfriend proposed to her and everything is right in her world. Little did she know that her world was going to start crumbling around her and that the biggest betrayal is from her own fiance. She must now gather unlikely allies and work to save not just her planet, but all of the planets. The question becomes, can Rynah set aside her prejudices and become friends with those that are pulled from their life to help her. She will have plenty of run ins with her now ex-fiance in trying to obtain the important crystals.

One of the main characters in this book is actually the ship Solaris. She is an AI (artificial intelligence) and she has attitude for days. I love this “character” because when we say that our cars are temperamental, it just usually means that in cold weather, it may not start. This is not the case with Solaris. She will deliver a slap down in the form of blowing hot steam at you, making loud noises, or anything else she wants to do if you talk smack. Rynah’s grandfather designed her so that she knows the secret of the crystals and will only fly for Rynah.

Brie, Alfric, Tom, and Solon are pulled from different time periods of Earth. They each possess a strength that will be needed for this mission to succeed. Brie may seem like the weak link because she is scared of everything, but her loyalty and gentleness are very much needed. Alfric is a gentle giant until you get on the wrong side of him. He is very protective of Brie and works to help her overcome her fears. Tom and Solon are the “smart” ones. Tom helps to navigate Solaris, while Solon kinda stays in the background. This unusual bunch becomes friends and family as they get to know each other.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because the characters made me love them. I found myself holding my breath when the pirates caught them, wondering how they were going to be able to overcome this obstacle. I am looking forward to reading this entire series because I am now hooked and they haven’t found all of the crystals yet. This would be a great book for young adults who like science fiction stories.
