Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice, written by Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD, is a nonfiction piece of writing. It explores sixty-two popular tips, myths, and tricks revolving around the subject of health, including, but not limited to, aids to lose weight, different foods to avoid, genetically modified foods, organic foods, the use of human growth hormone to prevent aging, and detoxifying the body. For each subject, he confirms it as true and believable or fake and fictitious based on published scientific research. This nonfiction book would appeal to a board audience of adults that are trying to learn more about a healthy lifestyle through a credible health authority. Readers are trying to dispel different myths and follow believable ones that could better their health. This book would not appeal to an audience of adults that are not curious about their lives and healthier ways of living.

The subjects discussed within the book were very board and attention-grabbing. I was surprised by the amount of information that I learned while reading it. The tone of the book was relaxed. The author even injected his sense of humor into subjects that would otherwise be quite dry. It was written in a way that the majority of patients would understand even without a background in the medical field. Each subject was supported by published medical studies and articles from reputable sources. It helps readers to understand the subjects and helps them draw conclusions whether they are true or false. In a grander scope of study, it also helps readers build their skills in questioning popular tips, myths, and tricks to prove whether they are fact or fiction in the future. In addition, I was also able to relate to each subject presented due to the common and real-life examples provided for each. It helps to tie each subject and make it more relatable to life.

The nonfiction book is written very well but could still be enhanced to be more educational. It is a very good book to start with to dispel different health tips and myths. But it is only a start for many readers as they start to explore deeper into subjects that interest them. Some of the subjects do have additional resources that the audience could research more with but such is needed with each subject. The author is responsible in holding his audience accountable for not only wanting to make wise health attitude changes but also in providing them with numerous sources of proven health authorities that would help them continue their health journey successfully. As an author who is also a doctor and higher education educator in the real world, he should be treating this book as another venue for education and opportunity to help others in a field that he is an expert in. In providing more sources that readers could look into after reading the book would complete that objective and further fulfill the oath that he has taken when starting his medical journey.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was written in a very entertaining yet educational manner, which made it much easier to both read and learn. It is unlike other educational books where the material is very dry and hard to digest. The author really explores numerous current controversial subjects that would interest a wide audience. I do agree with the author on the majority of subjects discussed and certainly learned a lot, including that a healthy diet should have all supplements included and thus, dietary supplements are usually not recommended unless there is a dietary deficient of such. I also learned about the common structure of a scam and how to spot them and even to question those who claim to be health care authorities. This book has really opened my eyes and viewpoint to be much more questionable regarding the type of material that I believe and act upon regarding my health and that of my family. But even though there is much to learn from the subjects and evidence presented in the book, there were still some grammatical errors that I noticed in the piece of writing, which is why I could not rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice, written by Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD, is a nonfiction book that works to confirm health tips and dispel health myths and tricks through the use of scientific research. The book was very educational and taught me to really use research to make sure the health changes presented as facts in life are really true. It has taught me to question each new health tip instead of blindly believing the newest scam on the market. I would recommend that each adult reads this book to gain further insight into common and current myths and to really educate oneself on different health subjects. We are the only ones to change our own health and lifestyle after all.
