Achieve Your Dreams: Why You Don't and How You Can is a quick read meant to inspire and motivate readers to chase their dreams. Whether you want to become a writer or an NBA basketball player, Hughes explains why we put these dreams on hold and what we can do to rekindle the spark and take control of our lives.

Now, I'm not too familiar with the inspirational book genre, so take my review with a grain of salt. I believe that some people may like this kind of book, but it was so-so for me. That's why I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. It didn't do much for me, but it wasn't a bad read. The ideas presented were pleasant, hopeful, and easy to relate to, but didn't particularly bring forth anything new to the table. Furthermore, the ideas were just ideas — abstract, without any suggestions for application other than "just do it." For a book titled Achieve Your Dreams: Why You Don't and How You Can, there is an awful lot of "Why" and not enough "How." Sure, mindsets are important, but for most people, it's not a matter of believing but rather a matter of building certain habits to physically do something.

It seemed like this book was originally meant to cater towards aspiring writers, yet the author tried to make the book more universal at the last second. (At least, that's how it felt.) With such a short book, I'd expect something a lot more concise than a broad piece trying to appeal to the masses. There just wasn't enough focus for me. I certainly am biased when I'd rather see more inspirational author references than J.K. Rowling.

Regarding spelling and grammar, the book wasn't horrible. It could stand another round of editing to straighten out the tenses, plurals, commas, and to eliminate words that clearly shouldn't be there. While easy to read, I found myself scratching my head at some of the phrases, specifically: "They continued and continue to sacrifice chasing the two birds that is their dream to instead stay the course with the one bird that is a safe mediocre career." A dream being one bird and a stable career being one bird, I get. But why is a dream two birds? And isn't the point of the comparison being that you cannot feasibly continue chase two birds at once if you really want to be satisfied with life?

Regardless, I do think some people may benefit from this book as an introduction or primer to self-confidence, especially if they feel like they're in a slump and need something to relate to, and especially if they have Kindle Unlimited.

The bird reference is from one in the hand two in the bush. Meaning that the two represents the goldmine of reaching and enjoying your fullfilled dreams.
