Concerned that vaccines cause Autism?

Have you been avoiding GMOs and paying top dollar for fortified foods?

Feeling on top of the world after finishing your latest lemon detox?

You’re not alone my friend. If you have an Internet connection or watch one of the numerous medical advice TV programs currently on air, you probably answered yes to at least one of these statements.

In his latest book Health tips, Myths, and tricks, Dr Tavels seeks to clarify and educate the public on some of the most controversial topics in modern health. As the title suggests Health Tips, Myths, and tricks is broken into three sections, which are then broken down into easily digestible short and concise chapters. Dr Tavels uses each chapter to explore his chosen topics in a manner reminiscent of your favourite high school teacher – with passion; and just enough humour thrown in to keep you engaged.

Dr Tavels trots out the usual suspects - weight loss, cancer, smoking - and you may be thinking to yourself that this is just another "how to be healthy' book with the same information as the last. Well that’s certainly not the case here. Not only has he tackled the aforementioned topics, he’s bravely dared to take on vaccinations, GMO’s and a litany of other hotly debated subjects. As well as making his position on these issues glaringly clear, he provides you with the ammunition you need to make educated decisions and choices regarding your health and wellbeing.

It’s obvious that Dr Tavels went to great lengths to research and present his findings. He provides references to respectable journals (a Scholarly Research Article), and then takes the time to explain those findings in a way that the general public can understand. Couple this with his real life examples of how to apply this information in your everyday life – and you have yourself a book that you’ll likely reference more than once.

It’s a great shame then, that Dr Tavels has been let down in the editing process of his book. Whilst the book does flow nicely, it’s got its share of inconsistencies in terms of formatting and layouts. Attention to detail is slightly lacking here and I hope these minor issues are picked up in the next revision. Small things such as BMI being discussed in terms of pounds, only to then have the demonstrative graph in kilograms. Whilst these small issues are not deal breakers, it’s disappointing that a book with such excellent content could be tarnished by these easy to fix problems.

Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a quick and informative read. Even if – like myself – you fancy yourself up to date on many of Dr Tavels chosen topics, there is much to be learned in his book. I rate this book a solid 3 out of 4 stars. Had it not been for the editing issues, I could have happily given this book a top score.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, this reader has some ‘snake oils’ to purge from my pantry!
