Yesterday Review

Yesterday by Samyann is a story about reincarnation. In this book we are introduced first to a young woman by the name of Amanda. Amanda is on her way to work one morning when a freak train accident happens. A train goes off the rails overhead in Chicago and a mounted police officer is unable to keep his seat on his horse and falls when the animals rears in fright from the train derailing and coming down. Amanda manages to get the officer out of the way since he is unconscious but he comes to in time to help protect her from falling debris when the supports crumble and break. Amanda is injured in the aftermath and is taken into an antique shop with a beautiful grandfather clock. It’s the last thing that she sees and hears before she loses consciousness. Mark, the officer she saved and who ends up helping her in turn, feels a strange connection to her, like he has met her somewhere before even though he knows that it is not possible but the feeling persists. He routinely visits her in the hospital and then they begin seeing more of each other and begin a relationship. As the days go by they begin to try to discover what it is that has them feeling like they know each other and so begins their journey.

Yesterday is an interesting book all in all. The characters are well written, both past and present. I enjoy how the author writes the history, the flashbacks, and how detailed it is. The story flows very smoothly with each transition. I like that we get background into why Amanda is the way that she is. She has suffered a lot of loss in her life and has decided to protect herself as best that she can to avoid any further pain but Mark is able to worm his way into her mind and her heart. The dynamics between the two is good overall but I would have liked more.

While this is a good book for me overall it’s not anything really exceptional that would have me coming back to it. The pace of the story is good but sometimes I just feel that the pace is a bit too slow as it focuses on the conversations between Amanda and Mark as she struggles to figure out what the connection between them is and what it has to do with the clock that seems to bring them together. There are some almost supernatural elements to it, with Mark seemingly having experiences in his sleep but those are just touched on and then fade away like mist. Honestly I would have liked more drama, more action…something to really spark this book and bring it to life. It just feels like an ordinary read and very bland for me. I kept waiting on something to really make this story spark and that just never came.

I think that my favorite parts of this story were when Amanda would go back in her subconscious to the other life when she was Bonnie. That was usually when this story had the most appeal for me because the storyline became more interesting but you never get to stay long enough to keep that interested flow. While I do admit that this story has its interesting moments I just found the overall effect of it to be very bland and plain. It needs some sort of spice to wake it up to really engage most readers. This book is a combination of past historical fiction and present but it needs more.

All in all I liked this book but I felt that the historical parts and going back with the regression therapy were the most interesting aspects of the story because it engages the reader the most and really draws them in. The present has its moments but I feel like certain scenes are a bit out of place at times because it interrupts the flow of the story. It’s a good book overall but not one that I will likely be revisiting. There are not any spelling or grammatical errors that I noticed so that is a plus. I give this book 2 out of 4 stars. It’s a okay book just not one for me.

I received a copy of this book for review.
