MY TRIP TO ADELE- REVIEW

To begin with, I didn’t know who Adele was until I read the title and googled her. I heard many of her songs and I have to say I’m not a fan. The authors R.I. Alyaseer and A.I.Alyaseer tell us that their previous two novels were written in Arabic and were rejected by the traditional publishers. Im glad that they wrote this one in English.

There are three different plots in this book.
1. Elias, a Moroccan who lives in Rome is disturbed whether some kind of black magic tore apart him and his long lost love Malika.
2. Yaser, a surgeon lives with his wife in Las Vegas and is sick of his marriage and commitment.
3. And Nadia a single mother who lives in Jordan with his only son Waleed struggling for her rights after the broken marriage.
But there’s one thing in common to all of them. Adele. Her songs always bring a ray of hope and gives them the strength to crawl forward with their life. There is an upcoming concert of Adele at Verona and all of them want to go there. As they’ve decided to face their faith ‘live’ how does their life turn around is the book all about.

This is a book which you don’t want to finish in one sitting. There are a lot of emotions filled and you just want to close the book after every chapter so that the story and the emotions settle in. The crave for love, need and tenacity find ourselves and be independent , a single mother’s undivided love for her only son , feministic attitude, helpless attempts to set everything right, need for the significant other, zeal to achieve your dream and what not. The book bursts full of feelings. Every chapter title is a name of a song of Adele which perfectly fits with the situation and every chapter ends with a few lines of the song. The song speaks it all. The places are beautifully described. The back alleys of the El-Fnaa square, the happenings at night, the atmosphere after the day ends and a few more element will leave you bewildered after knowing ‘behind the curtains’. The gambles, the casinos and the pleasure of Las Vegas which is quite contradictory to the calm, self satisfied people, yet vicious and drowned in their own orthodox methods is beautifully depicted. The story lingers from past memories to the present situation signifying the changes brought about in people with time. The book questions and partly tries to answer the issue about sins and virtue.

The story is beautifully woven. The characters are strongly written. They never go out of their place and do things which are unexpected of them. The authors have really taken care to make it a delightful read. If it was just one story, then it would be tiring to read. The idea of blending the three stories together makes it a delight to read.

I rate this book 4 out of 4, little hesitantly for the reason that some Arabic/Urdu words used in the book are not clearly translated to English. So it was a little difficult to understand. Other than this I didn’t find any major flaws with the book. I had a good time.

I like that you point out the themes of: helpless attempts to set everything right, zeal to achieve a dream, and feminist attitude. I think those could be overlooked, but proves this book does touch on many important themes.
I didn't notice the problem with some words not being translated right into English. I'm sure it's my ignorance of the original languages, but I wonder where it was difficult to understand.
